Pre drinking a "new phenomena"

The Toronto Star reports on a research study that says "pre-drinking" is a "new phenomenon that is common worldwide". It also calls "pre-drinking" a buzzword. For those of you who don't know, the act of "pre-drinking" is to drink before heading out for the evening, to avoid paying for expensive alcohol in bars and clubs.

I first participated in "Pre-drinking" activities 10 years ago. Back then it was called "pre-drinking". Isn't the news suppose to feature "new" things?
